Health and Safety policy

Man and Van Greenwich Health and Safety Commitment

Man and Van Greenwich is committed to providing a safe and healthy working environment for our employees, contractors, customers, and members of the public. As a professional man and van and removal service, we recognise that our activities involve manual handling, vehicle use, and work at customers premises, all of which require careful planning and control to prevent accidents and injuries.

This Health and Safety policy sets out our general approach, responsibilities, and working procedures to manage health and safety risks in all aspects of our removal and transport services.

Health and Safety Responsibilities

Overall responsibility for health and safety within Man and Van Greenwich rests with the company management. Management is responsible for ensuring that appropriate resources, training, and equipment are available to maintain safe working conditions and to comply with relevant health and safety legislation.

Supervisors and team leaders are responsible for day-to-day implementation of this policy. They must ensure that staff follow safe working procedures, use equipment correctly, and report any hazards, accidents, or near misses promptly.

All employees and contractors have a duty to take reasonable care of their own health and safety and that of others who may be affected by their actions. This includes cooperating with all safety instructions, attending training sessions, using protective equipment correctly, and informing management of any unsafe conditions or practices.

Risk Assessment and Safe Systems of Work

We undertake regular risk assessments covering our main removal activities, including loading and unloading items, transportation, and work at customer locations. These assessments identify significant hazards and the control measures needed to reduce risks to an acceptable level.

Before starting any job, team members are expected to review the nature of the work, the access conditions, and any special risks that may be present. Where necessary, the method of work will be adapted to ensure safety, and if the risk cannot be controlled to a safe level, the work will not proceed until additional measures are put in place.

Manual Handling and Safe Lifting

Manual handling is a key part of our removal services, and poor handling can lead to serious injuries. To minimise risk, we provide training in safe lifting and carrying techniques and encourage the use of mechanical aids and team lifting wherever possible.

Our manual handling rules include assessing the weight and shape of each item before moving it, planning the route to remove obstacles, using appropriate lifting techniques with a stable stance and straight back, sharing heavy or bulky loads between two or more team members, and never attempting to lift items that are beyond an individual’s capability.

Staff are required to use trolleys, dollies, straps, and other handling equipment correctly and to check that such equipment is in good condition before use.

Vehicle Safety and Driving Standards

Man and Van Greenwich maintains its vehicles to a high standard to ensure they are safe and roadworthy. Regular checks and servicing are carried out and any defects are reported and repaired promptly. Drivers must hold a valid driving licence appropriate to the vehicle they are operating.

All drivers and assistants must follow safe loading procedures, including distributing weight evenly, securing loads to prevent movement, and ensuring that doors and ramps are properly closed and locked. Overloading is strictly prohibited.

Safe driving practices are required at all times. This includes adherence to speed limits, compliance with the Highway Code, avoidance of distractions such as mobile phones while driving, and allowing sufficient travel time to avoid rushing. Drivers must not operate vehicles if they are unfit due to tiredness, alcohol, drugs, or illness.

Working at Customer Premises

When working at customer homes or business premises, our teams must respect both safety and property. Before starting work, the team will identify potential hazards such as uneven surfaces, narrow staircases, low ceilings, or poor lighting, and will agree a safe method of working that minimises risk.

Protective coverings and equipment such as blankets, corner protectors, and floor protection are used where appropriate to prevent damage and reduce slip and trip hazards. Items are stacked safely to avoid falls and walkways are kept clear wherever possible.

Customers are encouraged to keep children and pets away from working areas and vehicle loading zones to reduce the risk of accidental injury.

Use of Personal Protective Equipment

Personal protective equipment is provided where necessary to control specific risks. This may include protective gloves, safety footwear, and high-visibility clothing. Staff are required to use such equipment correctly and to report any damage or defects so that items can be replaced.

PPE is considered a last line of defence and does not replace the need for safe work planning, training, and effective risk control measures.

Training, Information, and Supervision

All new employees receive an introduction to our health and safety procedures as part of their induction. Ongoing training is provided in areas such as manual handling, safe use of equipment, vehicle safety, and customer care. Additional training is arranged where new tasks, equipment, or risks are introduced.

Supervisors monitor working practices to ensure that safety procedures are followed and to provide guidance and support where needed. Feedback from team members is encouraged so that safety measures can be improved over time.

Accident Reporting and Emergency Procedures

All accidents, incidents, and near misses must be reported to management as soon as possible, no matter how minor they may appear. This enables appropriate first aid, investigation, and action to prevent recurrence.

In the event of an emergency such as fire, serious injury, or road traffic accident, staff must follow the relevant emergency procedures, prioritising the safety of people over property. Where appropriate, emergency services will be contacted without delay.

Health, Welfare, and Continuous Improvement

We recognise that good health and safety management contributes to staff wellbeing and high-quality service. We aim to prevent work-related ill health by controlling exposure to hazards, encouraging regular breaks, and promoting safe working hours and practices.

This Health and Safety policy is reviewed regularly and updated when necessary to reflect changes in legislation, industry best practice, or the nature of our services. Suggestions from employees and customers are welcomed as part of our commitment to continuous improvement in health and safety performance.

By working together and following this policy, Man and Van Greenwich aims to deliver reliable, efficient, and safe removal services for every customer.
